The Sigma 36 is a well respected and solidly built cruiser racer. Following the considerable success of his one-design Sigma 33 cruiser-racer, introduced in 1978 as the first Sigma model, David Thomas designed the larger Sigma 36 in 1980/81 with the aim of repeating the success with a bigger version.
Although the design had an eye to racing it avoided the radical hull distortions to cheat the IOR racing rule that were popular at the time, and as a result the hull is a very elegant design giving speed on all points of sail with impeccable handling.
The wide beam of the Sigma 36 gives spacious accommodation, including a large aft double berth under the cockpit. Like virtually all David Thomas designs, the Sigma 36 is close-winded and fast, yet is easy enough to handle and sail to make a good long-distance ocean cruiser. ‘Yachting Monthly’ reviewed the design in 2001, commenting “….the Sigma 36 is beautiful to sail. There are not many yachts that can compare. She gives a huge feeling of security …. backed up by fabulous handling….”
Condor’ was purchased by our family in 2004 and since then has been used for light cruising on the West Coast of Scotland from then until 2022 (no racing) with an onshore lay up for a refit between 2011 and 2017 (the reason it took so long was I had a new (but extremely old house to do up and 2 children under 4!). She has been used very little since 2004.
During the refit, our aim was to create a bright, airy and comfortable family boat. The interior has an uncluttered, light, fresh and contemporary feel and we made a few changes to make life cosier and more accommodating below decks.
We have priced her competitively in the hope of a quick sale. We had an insurance survey done on her in September 2023 which is available to serious prospective purchasers.
‘Condor’ is a great boat to sail, fast and responsive yet comfortably manageable by 2 people. The self draining cockpit is extremely comfortable and spacious. Having sailed yachts with wheel steering, I find the tiller a joy to use and I frequently found myself happily sat in the aft lee corner of the cockpit easily steering the boat one-handed or with my foot! Furthermore the tiller folds right back to an upright position making the cockpit so much more spacious when not at sea.
She is currently on the hard at Creran Marine north of Oban .
